he Mazda Miata is nothing short of an iconic Import vehicle. Yes, you read that right. Achieving the goal of the most sold Sports Car in history, it is hard to deny it the title of iconic. With a near-perfect weight distribution in its front-engine rear-wheel-drive configuration, the Mazda Miata is a versatile vehicle. It has captured the heart of many enthusiasts, and with a healthy aftermarket, it's no surprise why. There is no doubt, the design was derived from earlier model Roadsters, and for good reason. The Mazda Miata is a visually appealing vehicle and is an absolute blast to drive. Meet Wingz, she hails from New Zealand but currently calls Alberta, Canada home. Her current project, Spark, a 1990 NA Mazda Miata.
Wingz obtained this project in 2017 and wasted no time making it her own. The interior of the vehicle has a custom center console, LRB aluminum door cards, and an NRG steering wheel with a quick-release hub. To complete the customization of the interior Spark also has the option of a custom made heart-shaped steering wheel. With OEM reupholstered seats, a Hard Dog Rollbar, Built By Hutch air vents, and JASS Performance HVAC panels, Wingz has created a Miata of her own.
The exterior sports custom see-through side skirts (yeah see-through, top that) and a NUE ducktail spoiler. Spark is also equipped with an LRB Speed undertray, Racing Beat intake, and a Yonaka exhaust.
Embedded: What is your goal with this project?
Wingz: To make the car as mine as possible and to show people, especially girls, that it’s ok to have your own taste. You don’t need to go with the flow. I feel like a lot of people have the same build and it doesn't really show their personality at all. Cars, like everything else, are an extension of who we are as a person and it sucks to see so many people do things just to be considered “cool”.
Embedded: Amen. What got you started as an automotive enthusiast?
Wingz: I grew up adoring the American big boats from the 1950s and 1960s. Same with Euro classics, like Le Mans cars, such as the Jaguar D Type and Porsche 917. I like to draw, so lines and shapes are important to me, everything from that era has a really cool and unique style that I like! I didn't really appreciate JDM until I got Spark. Now, I absolutely LOVE JDM! My biggest influence isn't really one thing but its a collection of photographs, color schemes, and even thoughts and feelings.
Embedded: What has been your biggest setback when building Spark?
Wingz: My biggest setback would definitely be the fact that I’m a broke student haha. I would have so many cars if I had more money.
Embedded: I think that is one of the truest statements we’ve had so far. More money, more problems.
